Please take a look at the schedule for the dates of science club this year. We will meet twice a month after school till 4:00.
The last two weeks we have investigated different competions to enter and work on during science club.
The first competition is a group competition. THE DEADLINE TO HAVE YOUR ENTIRE GROUP SIGN UP AND EMAIL ME BY IS DECEMBER 15TH!!!!!! E-Cyber Challenge link is here: https://www.ecybermission.com The second competition is for individual students This is the 3M Young Scientist Challenge! Start brainstorming ideas if you are interested. The deadline to submit a video is not until April. I will be here to help you along the way and get you the resources you need! http://www.youngscientistchallenge.com/ Have fun brainstorming and watching previous winners! 25,000 is the grand prize!!!!! Welcome to another year of science club!
A few differences from last year... * You need to attended every week on Thursdays * You are required to let me know if you are not able to make it ahead of time * We will be doing some long term community based projects. Please bring as many empty 2 liter clear bottles. They need to be this shape. We will be starting to plan our self sustaining ecosystem and will need bottles to start preparing.
Club members wer challenged to use only popsicle sticks and rubber bands to create a catapult that would launch a marshmallow. Our winning distance was a whopping 29ft! Congratulations!
This week we did a warm up activity of the importance of accurate observations by building legos with a partner. Then, we discovered the power of changing variables when trying to launch our mini alkaseltzer rockets. Club members were challenged to find the perfect combination of liquid and solid rocket fuel for the highest launch. If you enjoyed making the rockets launch you cand do it at home (but outside). All you need is a film canister, water, and alkaseltzer tablets. Enjoy! This week's science club involved some critical thinking skills and introductions. Members were faced with an "out of this world" challenge where only a few groups did not survive the challenge. Good thinking crew! We then did a get to know you activity where some students contracted scienceclubitis! We tried to find the source but realized that it indeed was a challenge. Next week, be prepared for a lego communication building activity and set off some mini rocket while learning about variables.
Welcome to science club. I am excited to get started with some fun experiments and challenges this month. Due to my illness before break, Club A will be starting on January 13th and Club B will start this week on January 6th. Check back here for updates and extra activities that you can do at home.
